The institution was first founded in 1878, and was named the Georgia Baptist Female Seminary; however, in 1900, H. J. Pierce purchased the property and renamed it Brenau. In 1911, the school was no longer privately owned and was instead taken up by a board of trustees. In 1928, the institution was altered to be a female,
