The purpose of her journey was to buy a Bible for which she had been saving for several years. Thomas Charles of Bala was so impressed by Mary Jones's love for the Bible and so concerned by the scarcity of Bibles in Welsh that he found no rest until a society was formed for the printing of Bibles.
