Fu introdotta nel 1897 dal governo degli Stati Uniti per autenticare un whiskey che non era stato in alcun modo adulterato. I whiskey bottled in bond dovevano essere prodotti in un'unica distilleria e maturare per almeno quattro anni in specifici magazzini (bonded wharehouses) sotto la supervisione governativa.
