A mulit position star, Gilmer would lead Alabama to the 1946 Rose Bowl with a victory over USC. He would go on to be drafted with the first overall pick in 1948 NFL draft by Washington and was named a member of the College Football Hall of Fame in 1993. SPORT Magazine, which ran from 1946 to 2000, celebrated what its editors
